Whole Wheat Goldfish Crackers

Look it’s another seafood post! Not really, just some cheese straws rolled out and cut into little fishie crackers. I saw this idea on Smitten Kitchen a year ago, and of course picked up a fish cookie cutter the next time I was at Bulk Barn. So it took me a little longer than expected to make these, but that’s really nothing new!

My focus group had mixed feelings:

Test subject #1 (female, 4.5 years) took a small bite, put it back in the bowl and declared “I don’t like these”.

Test subject #2 (male, almost 3 years) gobbled them right up!

Test subject #3 (male, 30+ years) asked for the recipe so he could make some more to eat with soup :)

Try them and see what you think!

Source: Smitten Kitchen

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups grated sharp cheddar

4 tbsp (1/2 stick) butter, room temperature

1/2 cup whole wheat flour

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 tsp salt

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Put all the ingredients in your food processor, blending for about two minutes until everything comes together in a ball.
  3. Roll out on a floured surface, to about 1/8″ thick.
  4. Cut out fish shapes, and transfer to the baking sheet. Use a skewer to poke eyes and make little smiles. Bake for 12-15 minutes until barely browned. Cool and munch away!

Did test subject #1 have a little sass with that comment or was it the other female Mini Mac?

I’ll definitely try these, but need the appropriate cookie cutter – it’s already on my list of things to pick up next time I’m out (there is actually a Bulk Barn penning downtown, on College, I believe). Will report my test results, of course
